The Ladies are Loving Social Media

It is a well-known and generally accepted fact that women speak more than men. I know most of the conversations I have with my boyfriend involve me doing the majority of the talking, while he is left to interject with quiet noises of assent and the occasional short sentence. It is as if we women are programmed to be social. We love to converse, to express how we feel, to hear how our friends and family are, what they are planning to wear to the Melbourne Cup, what they had for dinner last night and will be having for lunch … Continue »

If you can't beat them, Join them: A newspaper embracing digital media.

e-books are bigger and more popular than I previously thought. ‘For every 100 ink-and-paper books Amazon sells, 48 digital editions are bought for reading on Kindles.’ (The Age) And now Amazon has created a version of Kindle that can be used internationally. “Australia, here we come,” thinks Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, as he gushes about how much positive feedback he has been getting from newly converted Kindle users. So the Age have pricked up their ears and in a spirit of forward thinking and moving with the times have offered its readers an m-book. Written by Marieke Hardy, a Triple-J … Continue »

The Evolution of the e-book

I am a follower of a number of Australian independent publishing companies on Twitter. I have noticed lately a new trend amongst their tweets and postings involving e-books. This is a hot Web 2.0 topic in the publishing world, and for good reason. With the development of e-books, traditional books and all publishers come under threat. Whether this threat is justified or not is something I am interested in exploring. The main players in the plot of the e-book are Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Reader. While the Reader has been around since September 2006 and Kindle since November 2007 … Continue »

Work or Play?

My recent blog ‘Finding the Dream Job with Social Media’ got me thinking more about business networking and its place within the broad sphere of social media. Is business networking different to social networking? Should we keep the two separate? Are business networks a credible tool for employers and prospective employees alike? In an article from SEOmoz a selection of social and business networking sites are described with regard to their use as marketing tools. I will continue with Linkedin as an example; SEOmoz explain that this site is beneficial for gaining brand exposure for your business as it receives … Continue »

Finding the Dream Job using Social Media

Unemployed? Perhaps spending your jobless days on the net and more specifically social media sites is not such a bad habit to get into after all. Typing ‘job search’ into Twitter’s search engine shows how effective social media can be in assisting in the quest for employment. Whether all results from this Twitter search are credible is another story. It is important to be selective and critical. Twitter has a number of applications dedicated to finding jobs, including ‘Twitter Job Search’ and ‘Twellow’ (Twitter’s version of the Yellow Pages). Linkedin is another social networking site that can be of help … Continue »
